Reporting on the conflict between the mega mining project Conga and the people of Cajamarca, Peru
The following report appeared on the website Cajamarca Reporteros on 23rd September 2013.
The event brought together regional president Gregorio Santos, Congressman Jorge Rimarachin and environmentalist Marco Arana.
Bambamarca and Celendín Peasants reinstalled their camp located within walking distance of the Mamacocha lagoon near the concessioned zone of the Conga mining project.
Last Friday, residents of communities near the mining project came to the camp site and took pots, blankets and food and burned firewood that the Guardian of the Lagunas used for cooking.
Environmentalists claim that it was Yanacocha mining contractors who destroyed the tents and plastic camp and stole the belongings of the Guardians of the Lagoons.
Meanwhile, Hector Araujo, Lieutenant Governor of the village of San Nicolas, denied assaulting the ronderos. Araujo said he found no one in the camp and took food to avoid affecting the environment.
