CELENDIN: Attack on the Rondas Campesinas

The Rondas Campesinas are facing a threat to their unity, legitimacy, and their ability to carry out their functions as the autonomous social justice organisation of the peasant farmers of Peru.

A statement from the Rondas Campesinas Unitarias de la Provincia de Celendín stated that the true Ronderos of Celendin emphatically condemn and reject a plan organized by the Public Ministry and the Ministry of Interior, acting in collusion with the mining transnationals and using false leaders to attack the institution of the Rondas Campesinas.

They said that false leaders, some judges, prosecutors, police and `fujimontesinisno terrorists` have had the audacity to call a supposed Congress of the Rondas Campesinas in the province of Celendin, on the 30th of November and 1st of December, to take place in the municipial Coliseum.

The statement emphasises that the actual second Congress of the Rondas Campesinas of Celendin took place on 29th and 30th June 2013, with the involvement of rondero authorities of all districts of the province, according to the framework of the rondero statute and all national and international standards.

They ask the thousands of rondero men and women from all provinces of Cajamarca and of Peru to protest against this social scourge, the mafia of some state authorities, citizen insecurity, the legal harrassment of the rondero men and women, the invasion of the mining industry into  rural communities territories, and for the respect of customary law.

The statement finishes by stating that, by a unanimous decision at a rondero assembly on 21st November, the Rondas Campesinas rejected this false congress for being illegal and illegitimate.

The full statement in spanish can be read here.
