Reporting on the conflict between the mega mining project Conga and the people of Cajamarca, Peru
Today, on International Women´s Day many of us are remembering women of the past, who struggled for the freedoms women of today now enjoy. But we must also remember, and honour, the women who are still fighting against oppression – for themselves, for their families, for us all.
One of these brave and dignified women is Maxima Acuña Chaupe who leads her family in the resistance against one of the biggest gold mining companies in the world. The mine wants her land to rape the earth and destroy the water supply of the entire province of Celendin, Cajamarca but she resists, and her family resists. They´re not only fighting for the right to live in peace on their land, but they´re also fighting for the thousands whose lives would be devestated if the monstrous open pits were realized. Maxima is a shining example of dignity and strength, and today we honour her.
See below to find out more about her struggle.
