Reporting on the conflict between the mega mining project Conga and the people of Cajamarca, Peru
Almost a thousand demonstrators travelled to the high altitudes of the mountain lakes of Conga yesterday and successfully carried out their demonstration. Then came the police oppression which started in the early hours of today (18th March) when they began firing plastic bullets, tear gas and live amunition into the crowd. This first of all caused a split in the gathering, and then eventually the attack caused the dispersal of the demonstration completely. There is reports of injuries from the indiscriminate firing of tear gas and plastic bullets. The police then burned the camp of the Guardians of the Lagoons.
A delegation of ronderos is making its way to Cajamarca at present to hold a press conference to report on the mobilisation, the repression, and the next moves of the determined resistance.
They may have dispered the gathering today, but they only added fuel to the resistance of tomorrow.
